This January, the medical community joins forces to recognise and celebrate Thyroid Gland Awareness Month. This month is a great opportunity to learn more about this very important gland and how we can keep it healthy!

Located in the front of the neck, the thyroid gland helps regulate most of our body’s metabolic processes by releasing hormones into the bloodstream that affect everything from energy levels to digestion. We must understand how to maintain good thyroid health so that our bodies can function properly. Let’s take a closer look at what this month is all about and ways we can stay healthy.

What is Thyroid Gland Awareness Month?

Thyroid Gland Awareness Month was established to raise awareness about thyroid-related health issues among both patients and healthcare providers alike so that we can make sure we are staying healthy and well.

This year, we are focusing on educating people about thyroid cancer and its risk factors, encouraging patients to maintain regular check-ups, and providing resources for those living with thyroid disorders. As many organisations are joining forces to spread awareness this month, we have listed a few places where you can find more useful information on thyroid health below, these include various aspects of thyroid health including diet and lifestyle choices, symptoms management, early detection methods, and treatment options.

Common signs that something may be wrong with your thyroid include feeling tired or weak all the time, rapid weight gain or loss, hair loss, dry skin, difficulty concentrating, digestive problems, increased sensitivity to cold temperatures or heat, hoarse voice, swelling in the face or neck area, irregular menstrual cycles, anxiety or depression, mood swings, joint pain or stiffness, constipation or diarrhoea. If you experience any of these symptoms for an extended period, it’s important to seek medical advice right away.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take right now to maintain good thyroid health such as getting regular check-ups with your doctor, especially if you have a family history of thyroid disease.

Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins A & D such as fruits & vegetables along with healthy fats like olive oil & fish oils will help keep your hormones balanced and support the functioning of your thyroid gland. Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Keeping our thyroids healthy is essential for maintaining overall well-being and preventing illness. During Thyroid Gland Awareness Month, we should all try to learn more about this important part of our body, how it works and how we can ensure proper functioning through diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices. By doing so, we will not only be able to identify potential signs of trouble earlier but also build better habits for keeping our thyroids working properly into later life. #ThyroidGlandAwarenessMonth!
